Sanctuary Dogs

I’ve Become a Dog Sanctuary.

What is a sanctuary? Simply put, it’s a safe place. Yes, all the dogs we take in to rescue are put in a safe place.  That’s their foster home where they get love, food & clean water, exercise, and socialization. Foster dogs also get evaluated.  Their foster parents learn the dog’s personalities, likes & dislikes, and behaviors. Then the dogs are ready for adoption to a loving “furever” home.

My home is all that – and more.

There are two types of sanctuary dogs.  The first are the adoptable but overlooked – usually older, maybe not the cutest.  These dogs still have lots of love to give.  They have waited & waited for a home of their own.  If you have an empty place in your heart that needs filling, consider a sanctuary dog.

The second type of sanctuary dogs are the ones that will live at the rescue forever. These dogs either suffer from health problems, behavior problems, extreme shyness or are just seniors.  The rescue will give these dogs the best care until it is their time to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Most of my older dogs are between 14 and 16 years.  I have a 10-year old who, after 3 years, is still shy and frightens easily.  She still spends a lot of time under the bed because this is her safe spot.  Many dogs feel safe in a crate, but this dog came from a puppy mill. She never knew anything except a cage. Her puppies were pulled from her nipples & shipped to a puppy store.  When I got her, this poor mama was still full of milk.  She had been shaved down , shoved into a cage & transported halfway across the country.  Three years later, she won’t go into a crate.  It’s not a safe place for her, it’s still a nightmare.

My other sanctuary dogs have various health problems.  Some have eye troubles up to & including blindness.  Some are deaf.  There is heart disease, recurring skin issues, fused vertebrae, luxating patellas (“floating knee caps”), dental problems that have left them with few, or no, teeth. Three of them are unable to go outside on their own even though they are house trained.  So they are carried outside.  When they are ready, they are then carried back inside. Every dog here wants the same thing – food & water, a comfy place to sleep, and loving.  There’s NEVER enough loving. – Linda Goble

Gypsy is a sweet 12-13 year old, 14lb female Shih Tzu. Gypsy has a true Shih Tzu personality. She bosses everyone around, barks to let her foster mom know when it’s dinner time, and herds the furbaby crew down the hall to the bedroom when it’s time to go nighty-night. Gypsy loves taking long walks. She is potty trained, sleeps in the big bed, comes up in your lap to give kisses, and LOVES her belly rubs. Gypsy is in […]

Buddy is a Lhasa Apso mix who was a stray. Buddy is blind in one eye and has congestive heart failure which causes him frequent coughing & choking bouts.  He has had two syncopal episodes since he’s been with me.  Buddy wants to be Alpha dog but he has to stand in line behind Jake & Ben.  Buddy can be quite vocal about telling the household that he should be Alpha.  His favorite game is to kick dog beds all […]

Hi! My name is Fluffy. I’m a very sweet Maltese dog, and I’ll be 9 years old in March!  I’ve had a rough time of things lately. I have to be on medication for the rest of my life because I have Addison’s Disease,  and my dear owner passed away in January. I love riding in the car and afternoon walks in the park. I’m paper trained, and have been told I have the sweetest disposition ever! I am looking […]

Milo

Milo is a fairly laid back little boy who craves attention.  He is a Chihuahua-Rat Terrier mix who is about 10 yrs. old and weighs 9 lbs. Milo isn’t too interested in the other pups in the house.  Instead, he likes to beg for human attention and loves to snuggle.  Milo walks well on a leash and loves to sleep under the covers in the big bed. He is working nicely on housetraining, and will need more practice with a […]

Jake

Share This:

Jake is a 4 yr. old Maltese/Poodle Mix boy who weighs 14 lbs.  This adorable boy has three fused vertebrae near his tail, causing his back to be very sensitive.  He came from an abusive home, and would do best as an only dog in an adult household.  Jake will not play with other dogs, and considers the big bed to be his territory, which he will guard from the other furry ones.  He is nicely house trained, when taken […]

Ben

Share This:

Ben is a spunky black & silver Terrier mix with a striking raccoon-like masked face.  He can be barky & assertive to visitors but obeys fairly well when told to stop.  He needs a little more behavior training.  Ben loves attention & likes to sleep in the big bed.  The bed is usually crowded so he will sleep under the bed instead.  Ben will go upstairs by himself when the other dogs get too rambunctious because he doesn’t like to […]
